The Dartmoor Pony Heritage Trust is a registered charity; our aim is to save the Dartmoor Pony on Dartmoor. Due to the serious decline in the numbers of the indigenous Dartmoor Pony, they are now at a 'vulnerable' level according to the numerical guidelines published by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust.

The charity's mission statement is as follows

To save the indigenous Dartmoor Pony from extinction and to maintain its presence on Dartmoor, thus protecting our heritage for future generations.

The charity's aims are:

  • To provide the general public with education, awareness and information of the special heritage of the indigenous Dartmoor Pony.
  • To seek public support and financial sponsorship to ensure the survival of the indigenous Dartmoor Pony and its future welfare.
  • To protect and preserve the Dartmoor Pony as one of the recognized emblems of Dartmoor and for its value to tourism.
  • To encourage the use of the indigenous Dartmoor Pony for conservation management.
  • To work with all statutory or advisory bodies and the Moorland Farmers.
  • To make the indigenous Dartmoor Pony more valued.
  • To monitor and control the number of indigenous Dartmoor ponies.
  • To assist any other endangered breed as deemed appropriate.
